WORK WITH

Rap Club aims to work primarily with children with SEN (especially behavioural difficulty) or children at risk of exclusion. We also work with young people with speech and language difficulties to enhance their communication skills and build confidence. Although Rap Club is accessible to every child, experience has shown that it is these children that benefit the most. Children that are abnormally quiet or reserved tend to build esteem through our sessions and in the end we aim to have every child performing to an audience, overcoming barriers and stepping out of their comfort zone. Some children take longer than others but they all get there in the end! The sessions also promote teamwork as the children must learn to work together at some point whether it’s to write a practice verse or to sing the joint chorus.

At the end of the project the children feel a massive sense of achievement and feel a sense of star quality through emulating their favourite musical artists. It tends to boost their profile throughout the school but for a positive purpose, something many of these children won't be used to. In addition it also promotes the power of positive music and positive lyrics as unfortunately many young people are surrounded by 'negative rap'. 'Rap Club' exposes the children to positivity throughout the journey and strives to influence their thoughts and feelings in the right way. In essence rap club improves children's self esteem by being a means of effective communication, this is shown to improve their behaviour.

Class sizes vary from minimum 10 to maximum 15. However, no more than 15. This means that if being delivered to a class of 30 they would have to be taught in 2 separate sessions. Teaching assistants are not required to be present although Learning support assistants (one to ones) may be (that is purely the school's decision).
